New Orleans Pelicans' point guard Jrue Holiday will make his season debut on Friday, Nov. 18 against the Portland Trail Blazers, Pelicans general manager Dell Dempa announced.

Holiday took an indefinite leave of absence to support his pregnant wife, former soccer star Lauren Holiday, as she battled a brain tumor. The fact that Jrue Holiday is close to returning to action signals that Lauren Holiday’s recovery has progressed well enough for him to feel comfortable returning to work.

Lauren Holiday was diagnosed with a brain tumor early in September, while she was pregnant. She gave birth to a healthy baby girl later that month. After that, she was cleared to have brain surgery, which she underwent in October. The tumor was successfully removed and she was expected to make a full recovery.

The Pelicans began the season with eight straight losses and only picked up their first win last Thursday against the Bucks. They then added a second win by defeating the Boston Celtics on Monday. They support Jrue Holiday’s decision to take as much time as he needed to care for his family.

“In our case, we told Jrue to forget about the basketball part of it," coach Alvin Gentry told the Washington Post in late September. "This is where you take care of your family. We’re going to welcome him back whenever he feels that it’s time to come back, and his family is in good hands.”
