It hasn’t been a good season for the newly-located Los Angeles Rams. They fired their head coach Jeff Fisher just a couple of weeks ago, after quarterback controversy and problems with Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson.
One of the few positives that the Rams have had this season has been punter Johnny Hekker. On Saturday, he broke the NFL’s single-season record for most punts inside the 20, with his 47th against the 49ers.
He leads the league in punting average with over 46.2 net yards per punt. He’s also had a pair of sacks that went farther than 75 yards.
Hekker told NBC Los Angeles that the record wasn’t something he was exactly thinking about.
"The number really snuck up on us," Hekker said. "We didn't even really think about it until probably the last weeks, when we were like, 'Hey, damn, we're at 40.' We're just trying to do what we can to help this team. If records come with that, that's a positive."
Before the half against the 49ers, Hekker was able to make the record 48, and he could extend that before the game is over.
