Olympic diving trials 2016 results: Sam Dorman, Michael Hixon beat out 2012 medalists in 3-meter springboard

Sam Dorman and Michael Hixon have qualified for their first Olympic diving team, as the pair won the men's synchronized 3-meter springboard competition at the Olympic diving trials in Indianapolis on Wednesday. The pair have never competed together prior to the trials, but they beat out favorites Kristian Ipsen and Troy Dumais, a pair of former Olympians who took home the bronze medal in the event at the 2012 London Olympics.

Ipsen and Dumais came in second to Dorman and Hixon, but only the top pairing makes it to the Rio Olympics later this summer. Dorman and Hixon had a score of 1308.36, and finished 47.97 points ahead of Dumais and Ipsen's 1260.39.

Dorman, 24, is a four-time national team member who has won four synchronized 3-meter national titles, most recently with Ipsen in 2015. Hixon, 21, is a six-time national team member and won bronze at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games.

The United States has three top-five finishes in synchronized 3-meter diving since it was introduced to the Olympics in 2000. The bronze medal from Ipsen and Dumais in 2012 was the highest the United States has finished in the event. Dumais has participated in four Olympics over the years and still has a chance to make a fifth in the individual 3-meter competition.

Also on Thursday was the final for the women's synchronized 10-meter platform event. Jessica Parratto and Amy Cozad had a healthy lead over Anna James and Katrina Young going into the finals, and all they needed was a clean day of diving to secure their victory. They went into the day with a score of 617.28, while Young and James had 576.00.

After the event, Parratto and Cozad once again had a healthy lead and have won the event. They finished the day with a score of 935.76, with the previously third-place Samantha Bromberg and Delaney Schnell taking second with a score of 846.42. James and Young came in third at 836.10.

Parratto, Cozad and Bromberg are also competing for two spots in the solo platform competition, for which the finals will be held on Saturday.
