The 2015-16 NHL season may be at a close, but the offseason is in full swing as we head into July and the start of free agency. Those expecting full madness on Friday, July 1 may be disappointed considering the moves that came before.
First, the biggest free agent on the market is off the table. Steven Stamkos will stay with the Tampa Bay Lightning on an eight-year, $68 million deal that averages to $8.5 million a season. Stamkos took a clear discount, as the electric forward could have commanded upwards of $10 million per, but the Lightning are in a position to win now, unlike the other teams he was rumored to in Toronto and Detroit.
Yet, the biggest stories heading into July 1 are the deals that made the biggest splash. The Oilers traded Taylor Hall for peanuts — excuse me, Adam Larsson — to the Devils on a one-for-one swap that brings the former 2010 No. 1 overall pick to New Jersey for hardly anything in return. Not only that, P.K. Subban is out of Montreal and is headed to Nashville. Though the Canadiens have upgraded in years with former Predators captain Shea Weber, Nashville will be building around a star player for years to come.
Despite those names having been moved days before free agency, the day was awash with moves. Just within the first hour alone, 32 signings were made that saw more than $330 million given away by NHL teams to players. Big names like Milan Lucic, Kyle Okposo, David Backes, Troy Brouwer and more all signed with different teams in the opening minutes of free agency.
