Confused soccer officials can only laugh after coin toss lands on its edge

The start of Colombia vs. Paraguay at the Copa America was delayed a few extra seconds on Tuesday night because of the most unbelievable coin toss you'll see. The referee, captains, everyone involved could only laugh as the coin spun in the air, fell and landed on its edge.

What are the odds of this happening? One in a million? One in ten million? It's actually more frequent than you probably think. A 1993 experiment conducted by two physicists showed that an American nickel will land on its edge once every 6,000 tosses. Obviously the Copa America used a special coin and not regular currency, but this shows at least that a coin landing on its edge isn't unheard of.
