Joe Kovacs is the man to watch in the shot put final, while Galen Rupp will try to qualify in the 10,000-meter race at the Olympic trials on Friday.

The men's shot put final and 10,000-meter race final will take place on Friday, the opening day of the USA Olympic Track and Field Trials in Eugene, Ore. The trials will determine who will represent the United States in the upcoming 2016 Rio Olympics, and Galen Rupp will be looking to qualify for his second event at said Olympics with the 10,000-meter race.

Rupp is the only athlete competing in Eugene to qualify already for the Olympics thanks to his win in the Marathon Trials back in February. He will be competing in the 10,000-meter final on Friday evening, with television coverage available via NBC beginning at 9 p.m. ET and running for about an hour. The event will also be livestreamed on NBC Sports, as will the men's shot put final earlier in the day, beginning at 7 p.m. and running through 9 p.m.

The 10,000-meter race will also have a livestream simulcasting the NBC coverage.

Other than Rupp, Bernard Lagat is definitely a man to watch on Friday. He is a two-time Olympic medalist and is trying to make his fifth Olympic team at the age of 41. If he succeeds, he'll be the oldest US Olympic runner ever.

In the men's shot put final, Joe Kovacs is favored with a season best of 22.13 meters, nearly a foot farther than any other throw in 2016. Ryan Crouser and Kurt Roberts are the No. 2 and No. 3 competitors in the world, but they're well behind Kovacs. The men's shot put is the US's strongest throwing event in this year's Olympics.
