Despite being first in the NL Central, the Cubs have not been great lately. In their last 10 games, they’ve only won two, which is a stark contrast from how they started the season. Perhaps they’ll get back on their feet after the All-Star break, and the person that apparently believes in them the most is Cubs uber fan Stephen Colbert.
The cold open on Monday’s episode of The Late Show had Colbert cheering on Chicago — oddly, after their game against the Nationals, which took place on, uh, June 14 — and ruminating on their championship hopes, picking up and rubbing various lucky charms. (Colbert has a rabbit’s foot and a three-legged rabbit, and well, I think you can put two and two together.) The most prized lucky charms, however, are three of the Cubs’ All-Stars: Anthony Rizzo, Jake Arrieta and Kris Bryant. You’d have to wonder what the conversation was like before they filmed this segment.
Colbert: “Hey, do you guys want to be on my show?”
Rizzo: “Sure! As guests? Do you want us to play a game with you?”
Colbert: “No, I’d like to rub my hands on y’all as good luck charms.”
Bryant: “Uh ... okay.”
Maybe the Colbert Rubdown — the spiritual successor to the Colbert Bump — will actually help them out?
