Ah the long awaited MLB trade deadline has arrived and the rumors and trades are pouring in. Chris Sale and Jonathan Lucroy are the big names on the market now that Andrew Cashner has been sent to the Marlins, and Lucroy already caused a ruckus. As for other big names and big-name teams: Jay Bruce is headed to the Mets, while Rich Hill and Josh Reddick are definitely moving to L.A. to wear Dodger blue. Elsewhere Carlos Beltran has been traded to the Rangers.
Prices are through the roof because of the Drew Pomeranz trade, which set warped expectations for the entire market. Teams are scrambling to find pitchers before this offseason's bare-bones free-agent pitching market, and the cost of a deal is insane this year.
Speaking of Lucroy, the Brewers had a trade agreement in place with the Indians, until the catcher blocked the trade by exercising his no trade clause. It leaves the Indians in a continued search for a catcher. Sale had generated only faint interest until he was suspended for tearing up throwback jerseys (maybe teams like a rebel). Sale served his five-game suspension and returned to the team on Thursday, making his start against the Cubs on the North Side of Chicago.
While some teams will be made to better a team in preparation of the 2016 postseason, other organizations will be looking to shed some players (and their contracts) in an effort to rebuild or reinforce for the future. For those teams that are struggling, the latter will likely be the best course of action barring delusions of grandeur. Because of the scant pitching availability, teams will be in a position to hold out for deals that will be tantamount to ransom.
As to the deadline itself: it’s typically set for the last day of July, but MLB commissioner Rob Manfred opted in January to move the deadline back one day since July 31 falls on a Sunday. The deadline time, however, will remain unchanged at 4 p.m. ET and Manfred stressed at the time this would be a one-time adjustment.
With all eight games scheduled to start at 7:10 p.m. ET or later, there’s nothing to split the focus away from the deadline insanity. And so, let the trading games begin.
