Olympic trials 2016 schedule: Women's gymnastics, track and field competition on Friday

Track and field competition will continue while women's gymnastics will get underway for Olympic trials action on Friday.

On Friday, the USA Track and Field Olympic trials will continue from Eugene, Ore. while a whole different slate of trials, the USA Women's Gymnastics trials, will begin from the SAP Center in San Jose, Calif. Those gymnastics trials will be broadcast live on NBC beginning at 9 p.m. ET and running for about two hours.

A live stream of that coverage will also be available, running a simulcast of the network coverage. The women's gymnastics trials include all four events from the Olympic slate -- balance beam, floor exercise, uneven bars and vault -- on display on Friday and then all four events again on Sunday. Those are the only two days of those trials.

Simone Biles is the favorite to qualify automatically for Team USA at the 2016 Rio Olympics, with the other four members of the gymnastics team expected to be selected by a committee at the conclusion of the trials.

Only the top all-around finisher after two days of competition will automatically qualify for Rio, while the other four will be selected to try and build the strongest team, though results from the trials obviously play the biggest factor there. Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman, gold medalists for the United States at the 2012 London Olympics, will be among those competing with Biles on Friday and again on Sunday.

At the US Track and Field trials, the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase and discus throw finals will be accompanied by the women's 100-meter hurdles finals. The latter event is the most significant, as the United States managed to take home three of the top four finishing spots in the finals in London, including a silver and bronze medal.

They didn't take the gold, like they did back in Beijing in 2008, but Dawn Harper, the woman who managed that gold and managed the silver last time will be competing again on Friday.
