Olympic swimming results 2016: United States wins fifth gold since 1996 in women's 4x200m freestyle relay

Team USA takes home the top prize, adding another medal to its total.

The United States women won gold in the women's 4x200m freestyle relay Wednesday. Australia took silver, and Canada secured the bronze medal.

In the qualifiers, Team USA, with a lineup of Allison Schmitt, Missy Franklin, Melanie Margalis and Cierra Runge, finished on top with a time of 7:47.77. The United States lineup was different for the finals, featuring Schmitt, Leah Smith and Maya DiRado and with Katie Ledecky swimming anchor. They won the finals with a time of 7:43:03.

The women selected to represent Team USA in this final have already been very successful in Rio. Ledecky holds two individual gold medals and one team silver medal so far. Smith won bronze in the 400m freestyle, and DiRado has won silver and bronze in the medleys.

The United States women have been dominant in this event in recent history, winning gold in the 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2012 games. Team USA's women took bronze in the 4x200m freestyle relay in 2008.
