Women's gymnastics finds its way into the American spotlight every four years, when Team USA sends a team to the Summer Olympics that contends for gold medals in a host of events. It shouldn't be much different this year, when 19-year-old Simone Biles and four American teammates descend on Rio de Janeiro hunting for more titles.
NBC will provide television coverage on Sunday, available to also watch online through NBC Sports.
The Americans' road to Olympic glory gets going with a qualification round on Sunday. If they succeed, they'll move on variously to the medal rounds in the team, all-around and event competitions, and that's when this will really get fun. But first things first: the Americans need to do well on Sunday to march onward in Rio.
The five women competing for Team USA are team captain Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Biles, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian. Raisman and Douglas participated in the London Games in 2012, while Biles, Hernandez and Kocian are Olympic newcomers.
Biles is viewed as the sport's greatest rising star – its greatest star of any kind, really – and faces significant expectations heading into Rio. The New York Times wrote in February that she is "the best American gymnast since, well, probably ever." The Times describes her in almost mythical terms:
She is 4 feet 9 inches, with size 5 feet, but there is an unfathomable amount of power packed into her petite package. She flies through the air as if she were part bird and part cannonball. When she competes, it is nearly impossible not to stop and stare.
The Americans will be one of several teams competing on Sunday. Many of the teams comprise of athletes from one nation, while eight others are "mixed groups" that feature athletes from various different nations.
Here's a full listing of Sunday's qualifying events, with complete viewing information included.
