Fantasy football start/sit advice, Week 1: Spencer Ware primed for a good day

The Chiefs will be counting on their third-string running back to have a good day vs the Chargers. We explore the fantasy implications.

With Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid announcing on Friday that the team will likely be without running back Jamaal Charles for their game this Sunday against the San Diego Chargers, backup Spencer Ware will look to take the team’s role as their lead back this weekend.

Some may think that fellow backup running back Charcandrick West would be the next in line behind Charles, but West is nursing an elbow injury himself and is listed as questionable for Sunday. Ware should get plenty of opportunities this weekend against a Chargers team that has recently struggled in stopping the run.

Fantasy Impact: Since Charles missed a majority of the 2015 season with a knee injury, Kansas City already knows how to operate successfully without their star running back in the lineup. Ware has very good potential to be the surprise fantasy performer in Week 1.

Yahoo!’s projections only see Ware gaining 76 total yards on 15 touches and no touchdowns during Sunday’s game against San Diego. But fantasy owners should not be shy to insert Ware into their lineup this weekend given the injury to West and the fact that the Chargers gave up at least 150 total rushing yards in both games against Kansas City last year.
