Nike Golf announced earlier this summer it would put an end to its club-making business, but they weren’t expected to leave the links completely. Its stars like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy will continue to wear the Swoosh head-to-toe, with Nike’s on-course apparel and shoe lines still being viable for the company.
Now, they’ll add the world’s top player to the Nike ranks once again.
Per a report from ESPN’s Darren Rovell, Jason Day has signed with Nike to wear the company’s apparel and footwear for the 2016-2017 PGA Tour season. He’ll keep his TaylorMade clubs, but it’s a change from the Adidas apparel that traditionally pairs with TaylorMade that Day’s worn for the course of his pro career.
Sources tell ESPN.com that the world's largest shoe and apparel company has signed Jason Day to wear its shoes and apparel, including its hat.
The move became possible when Nike suddenly announced last month that it was leaving the equipment business. Day, whose contract is up at the end of the year with TaylorMade-Adidas, is happy with his equipment, so he re-signed with TaylorMade.
Day is a known close friend and confidant of Tiger Woods, so it’s not too much of a shock to see the Aussie come join up with the brand his pal and mentor made famous on the course. It’ll give Nike three of the biggest names in the sport when Tiger returns to the course in mid-October to open the 2016-17 PGA Tour season at the Safeway Open in Napa.
