There are two things I know for sure about Novak Djokovic.
- He is very good at playing tennis. I know this because he has been ranked No. 1 multiple times during his career. He has also won 66 professional singles tournaments, including 12 Grand Slam titles.
- While playing tennis he frequently likes to rip his shirt, either out of frustration or joy. I know this because he keeps doing it.
He did it at the 2013 Australian Open.
He did it at Wimbledon in 2015.
And he ripped it again on Friday at the US Open.
Maybe the zipper was too tight. Maybe he needed better ventilation. Maybe it’s just easier to replace a shirt than a racket when you need to destroy something in frustration. Even Djokovic doesn’t have a good reason for why he does it.
"I keep asking myself the same question,” Djokovic said during a post-match interview on ESPN. “Sometimes you don't have an answer. I guess it just happens. In the heat of the moment, you tend to do things like that."
The good news for Djokovic is he went on to win the match and advance to the finals. The bad news is that shirt is definitely ruined.
