Patrick Beverley shut down Lonzo Ball, so of course LaVar Ball said something ridiculous

After Patrick Beverley put Lakers rookie Lonzo Ball through a living nightmare in his NBA debut, LaVar Ball had some tough words for the Clippers guard, who called his son a “weak m****** f*****” after the game.

"Yeah, you shut the m-----f----- down," LaVar Ball told ESPN. "And your check still ain't going to go no higher than what it is. Yeah, you shut him down. OK ... Who is Patrick Beverley? He played all last year and nobody said nothing about him. Now we are looking at your first game. Why? Because Lonzo's name is attached to it.

"So you got to be [all hard]," he added. "Let's see what you do the next five games, if you are going to be pumped up towards everybody like that and go back to your 0-for-5 shooting and your two or three rebounds. Nobody is going to care about you. But you put my son's name in it and you put my name in it, now you got some action and you got some people talking."

Beverley is one of the toughest perimeter defenders in the NBA, and he has First Team All-Defense honors to show for it. And during the Clippers’ 108-92 season-opening rout of the Lakers on Thursday, he welcomed Ball to the NBA with a level of defensive intensity that would make any rookie cringe in his sleep:

Ball finished his highly anticipated NBA debut with only three points on 1-of-6 shooting. According to ESPN Stats & Info, he shot 0-of-2 from the field and had only three assist opportunities when Beverley was guarding him.

It went exactly the way Beverley said it would in mid-September:

“I mean, it’s basketball,” Ball said after the game. “He plays 94 feet. It’s what you’re supposed to do. You know, he’s a good defender. I just tried to do what I can to get the offense going.”

But it didn’t stop on the floor.

After the game, ESPN’s Marc J. Spears reported Beverley ran outside of the Lakers locker room and yelled: “"Weak ass m***** f*****. Bring him out on the court with me and I will tear his ass up.” He never mentioned the rookie specifically, but LaVar Ball knew who the comments were for.

"You ain't got to say it by name because I saw the way he looked at me when he was on the side of the bench," LaVar said. "He was going to see if I can get eye contact. I just looked at him like I looked right past him because he's nobody.”

The Clippers and Lakers are cross-town rivals, which means we get to see Ball and Beverley go toe-to-toe three more times this year. And if each game gets as wild as the first, this could be a long season for the Lakers rookie.
