The Chiefs and Giants played one of the more sloppy games during the early slate of Week 11. It ended with the Giants coming out on top in a 12-9 game, earning their second victory of the season.
The game ended up going into overtime after a fourth quarter with turnovers, silly plays, and a clutch field goal in the final seconds. But it was Roger Lewis who will be remembered as the hero in this one after making one of the best catches of the season.
Here’s how we got there.
The Giants helped the Chiefs get better field position with a penalty
Already faced with a second-and-18 from their own 40 with just under nine minutes left in the fourth, the Giants were taken back even further after an Eli Manning incompletion.
John Jerry would be called for unnecessary roughness after he headbutted the Chiefs’ Kevin Pierre-Louis. It gave them a third-and-33 from their own 25.
Luckily for the Giants, Shane Vereen was able to pick up 12 yards, where they then punted from the 37. De’Anthony Thomas would field a punt at the 20 and return it for eight yards to their own 28.
The Chiefs then wasted it with a Travis Kelce INT
Kareem Hunt got the drive started off right with a 12-yard run, getting the Chiefs to their own 40-yard line.
Then, Andy Reid pulled a trick out of the ol’ bag, which turned into a Travis Kelce interception.
It ended up not costing them, as the Giants were forced to punt on the ensuing drive. But things also didn’t get any better for the Chiefs.
Because four plays later...
Alex Smith threw a late interception
Coming into Sunday’s game, Smith had just once interception all season, which he threw in his last game against the Cowboys.
Faced with second-and-10 from his own 18, Smith threw one to Janoris Jenkins, who took it back to the Kansas City 23.
The interception set up the Giants for a two-minute drill with a timeout in their back pockets.
The Giants would settle for a field goal
After Smith’s interception that gifted the Giants with prime field position, they were only able to turn it into a field goal, but it gave them a 9-6 lead with 1:41 left in the game.
You would think in a game as messy as this one, that would be it. But...
The Chiefs weren’t ready to go away quietly
After it appeared that the Chiefs would be dead after yet another Smith interception, Jenkins would be called for pass interference, saving the Chiefs from disaster.
Smith and the Chiefs then went on a nine-play, 69-yard drive in 1:37 to get a field goal with just five seconds remaining in the game, which included this heroic run by Smith:
Roger Lewis basically won it in OT for the Giants with an amazing catch
After making their way into Chiefs territory in overtime, Manning hit Roger Lewis with a 34-yard pass while being draped by the Chiefs’ Phillip Gaines on a fourth-and-5 from the Kansas City 36-yard line.
Manning then took a knee to set up the Aldrick Rosas field goal, which he made to win the game for the G-Men, 12-9.
The Giants’ win comes days after McAdoo got the dreaded vote of confidence from team owner John Mara and chairman Steve Tisch. This might not be a win to save his job, but it’s a good start if the Giants were to go on some type of run here late in the season.
