Saturday at the Breeders’ Cup was full of upsets and long shots winning, but the day ended with co-favorite Gun Runner prevailing in the 34th running of the $6 million Breeders’ Cup Classic at Del Mar Racetrack just north of San Diego, Calif.

Gun Runner won the 1¼-mile race, holding off Collected and West Coast down the stretch.

Gun Runner, who finished third in the 2016 Kentucky Derby, was at 2-1 odds a co-favorite with defending Classic champion Arrogate, who finished fifth in his final race.

“It’s real disappointing to see him go out like that,” Arrogate trainer Bob Baffert said on the NBC broadcast, “because we know how great he is.”

It was the second Breeders’ Cup Classic win for trainer Steve Asmussen, and his first since Curlin won in 2007.
