Cam Newton tells the Packers 'watch this,' then throws a touchdown

He said he could tell they had been watching film. It still didn’t matter.

It’s one thing to be a good football player, but it’s a whole other thing to basically call your shot. That’s what Cam Newton did against the Packers.

In the first quarter, Clay Matthews can be heard yelling, “It's that wheel route! It's that wheel route!” Newton could be heard talking back, saying, “You’ve been watching film, huh? That’s cool, watch this.”

He then throws a touchdown to Christian McCaffrey, who had a great drive on the possession. McCaffrey had five carries for 20 yards, as well as four receptions for 40 yards and a touchdown.

Newton went five-of-six passing for 49 yards and a touchdown on the drive.

On Wednesday, Newton talked about the moment with Matthews and McCaffrey. “I'm mad they didn't see me and C-Mac's reaction to when he said that,” Newton said via ESPN. “It was funny. You could hear it clear as day, 'Watch the wheel route, watch the wheel route.'

“Then there was, like, a pause, and the referee was right there, and I'm looking at C-Mac, C-Mac is looking back up at me, and we're like, 'Yeah, it's the wheel route.'“

Newton joked that the team would be having new signals meetings over the course of the week.
