Draymond Green called Kevin Durant a ‘consolation prize’ from losing last year’s NBA Finals

A consolation prize to get the big prize? That’s a good strategy.

Draymond Green reminded us that he was fine with the Warriors blowing a 3-1 lead in the 2016 NBA Finals. Why? Because the consolation prize was Kevin Durant, according to Green.

“I had a letdown last year, but like I told everybody before — if Kevin Durant was the consolation prize to lose, thanks for that loss, and we champs this year.”

The Warriors blowing a 3-1 lead in the Finals was one of the biggest memes the past year, as well as one of the most overused. They dealt with it all year, but the memes and trash talk was clearly all worth it to Green and the Warriors.

Green told reporters after Game 3, “I told him earlier in the year, I said, ‘It’s cool that you’re here, but we really don’t need you for the regular season. We kinda gonna need you for these Finals.’ And he stepped up big and made plays for us.”

Durant ended up winning Finals MVP, so you could say that he was absolutely right about this.
