Belmont Stakes 2017 post positions: Eyes turn to Irish War Cry, Epicharis

With favorite Classic Empire out, the favorites shifted a bit on Wednesday.

Horse Racing: Kentucky Derby-Workouts Mark Zerof-USA TODAY Sports

The 2017 Belmont Stakes lost its favorite on Wednesday morning when Classic Empire was pulled from the race with a hoof abscess, but the rest of the field of 12 was slotted into their posts on Wednesday afternoon in New York. With the presumptive favorite out, Irish War Cry was named the morning line favorite and will start from the seventh gate in the 12-horse field.

Japanese horse Epicharis will start from the 11th spot and has been given 4/1 odds. Lookin at Lee, who finished second in the Kentucky Derby, will break from the sixth position and has 5/1 odds. Also of interest, Patch, the one-eyed horse who found love at the Kentucky Derby, will start from the outside 12th gate. He has 12/1 odds.

The Belmont will go to post at approximately 6:37 p.m. ET on Saturday. You can watch the broadcast on NBC beginning at 5 p.m. or stream coverage live beginning at 3 p.m. via NBC Sports.
