The weigh-ins for Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor were mostly uneventful, but did reveal some interesting things. McGregor weighed in at 153 pounds, one under the official weight limit of 154 pounds, while Mayweather came in at 149 1⁄2 pounds.
Mayweather likely didn’t cut any weight for the weigh-ins. He’ll weigh something very similar to that number when he enters the ring against McGregor on Saturday. McGregor, on the other hand, has fought at higher weights previously, and likely did a lot of weight cutting to reach the limit on Saturday.
This means McGregor could weigh as much as 170 pounds when he enters the ring against Mayweather, the smaller competitor. Then again, McGregor’s strength advantage would be much greater in mixed martial arts, where he would be using 4-ounce gloves as opposed to the 8-ounce gloves that will be used on Saturday.
He also would be able to grapple and use his weight as a weapon, and there’s not as many opportunities to do that in boxing. Following the weigh-in, there was plenty of talk, including McGregor screaming at Mayweather in the stare-down and claiming that Mayweather was out of shape when interviewed afterward.
