Clemson became the Tigers in 1896, when the school’s first football coach, Walter Riggs, brought the mascot with him from his alma mater ... Auburn. Despite that, uh, direct connection, Clemson was actually the first of the two schools to create a costumed mascot in 1954 and Aubie didn’t make his debut for another 25 years. So which one’s better? The Tiger, with his pushups and child of unknown origin? Or Aubie, winner of a record nine mascot national championships?
