The Arizona Cardinals moved to the valley when I was two years old. For years it was the easiest ticket in town to get because Arizona is a transient state. We have people from everywhere, meaning few people had any attachment to the team early on. Now, those people who moved into Arizona 30 years ago have grown kids who grew up in Arizona and feel more of an attachment to the cities they grew up in.
What to Eat
Zipp’s Sports Grill
Best sports bar in the valley, a great place to catch any game, fantastic food, and ice cold beer, and an institution in Arizona. The homegrown spot has locations all over the valley, making it easy to find one wherever you are in the sprawling landscape of Phoenix and its surrounding areas.
If you need an introduction to Mexican cuisine, there’s no better place. An award-winning chef, putting her spin on traditional dishes.
Biggest tourist attraction
Grand Canyon National Park
One of the seven natural wonders of the world, it’s a 4.5-hour trip from where the Arizona Cardinals play on Sundays. However, if you have the time, it’s a sight to behold.
277 miles long, 18 miles wide and one mile in depth, the south rim is where you can get all your sightseeing done. If you want a more intense experience, take a mule down to the canyon floor with a tour group, but make sure you book early.
Under the radar attraction
If it’s not the dead of summer, find one of the number of hiking trails all over the state. Sedona has the best hiking spots, but definitely is not under-the-radar.
Game day experience
The worst part about the Arizona Cardinals’ stadium experience is it is not in Phoenix. It’s in Glendale, about 22 miles from the airport. If you want to stay in Glendale there are plenty of hotel options, but if you want to stay in the more tourist friendly Phoenix or Scottsdale plan on getting to the stadium three hours early. There is parking available all over the stadium, but free parking includes a bus ride to the stadium. You can Uber to Westgate to get your day started early, but there can be big crowds on Sundays, so make sure you give yourself time.
