The city of Detroit certainly has a reputation, but anyone who has actually been inside the city limits typically is amazed by how much it has transformed in the past decade. Downtown is truly burgeoning, and it has people flooding downtown to be a part of it. Additionally, what other city offers a view across a river to another country?

What to Eat

Slow’s BBQ

Detroit may not be known for its barbecue, but Slows is a must-visit restaurant for visitors. Located just a couple minutes from Ford Field, Slows offers mouth-melting meats and all the classic barbecue sides. You’ve got to get the mac and cheese and sweet potato mash.

Lafayette Coney Island

The coney dog is Detroit’s most iconic food. A hot dog covered in chili, diced onions and mustard (no ketchup allowed) may not seem like much, but Detroit has perfected it. There’s a local debate as to whether Lafayette or American Coney Island has the better offering, but true locals know Lafayette reigns supreme.

Biggest tourist attraction

Hitsville USA

Fans of Motown music have to take a stop at Hitsville USA. The small building is the exact location of the original recording studio for Motown Records and features incredible relics from that era you won’t be able to find anywhere else in the world.

Under the radar attraction

Third Man Records

Third Man Records is a neat little story celebrating Jack White’s music label. Enjoy a rare collection of records, a neat collection of historical artifacts, and even a tour of how vinyls are made.

Game day experience

Normally, the place to tailgate is Eastern Market, which offers food vendors, street games, plenty of parking—all within walking distance of the stadium. Unfortunately, Eastern Market announced it will be closed for the 2021 season.

So your best options are the multiple parking lots surrounding the stadium, which typically allow tailgating. If you plan on tailgating, make sure you come early, as the parking lots near Ford Field pack up pretty quickly. If you’re just there for the game, there are plenty of parking garages further away that will offer shuttles to the stadium.
