The Broncos were dead in the water in January. They lost four straight games, starting the conference season 0-3, and the idea of an NCAA Tournament bid was ludicrous. But senior star Derrick Marks wasn't going out like a punk: The Broncos closed the regular season by winning 15 of 16, including wins over the Mountain West's best teams, to squeak into the field. Marks won conference player of the year, Leon Rice won conference coach of the year.

Style of play: Marksism

Everything Boise State does on offense, they do it because Derrick Marks is leading. He shoots 36 percent of the team's shots when on the court, the most of any player in the tournament. The 6'3 senior from Chicago also serves as an effective point guard with a nearly 2-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Defensively, the Broncos' strength is on the boards. They grab almost 75 percent of opposing misses, 17th best in the nation.

Key player: X Marks The Spot

There are few facets of basketball Derrick Marks is not great at. He's the Broncos' best scorer. He hit 30 six times, scores 19.1 per game, and manages to shoot 50 percent inside the arc and 40 percent from deep, all with defenses knowing he's going to be the guy shooting.  He's not a freak athlete, but he's incredibly creative and nifty with the ball.

They blue it!

The signature of Boise State's highly successful football team is its blue field, as they were one of the first teams to play on colored artificial grass. You're probably wondering if the famed Smurf Turf has a counterpart on the hoops court -- the Azure Floor? Sadly, the answer is no. Boise's court has some blue on it, but its base color is pretty generic wood. Missed opportunity.
