Congratulations to Hampton, the worst team in the NCAA Tournament. They went 12-17 in regular season play, and entered the MEAC Tournament as a 6-seed without injured leading scorer Dwight Meikle... and they won! North Carolina Central, who went 16-0 in regular season play, slipped up in the semis, opening the door for a rando, and Hampton swooped in.
Style of play: Full speed ahead
The Pirates play very fast, almost 70 possessions per game, 15th-fastest in college basketball. This is a bad idea!!!! To pull off an upset against a 1-seed, they'd want to try and shorten the game as much as possible to minimize their disadvantages. And there are disadvantages -- they have the 305th-best offense in the country. (Out of 351.)
Key player: Like Meik
Dwight Meikle is clearly Hampton's best player -- he led the team with 13 points and 7.5 boards per day, is a top 100 defensive rebounder and shoots 53 percent from the field -- but he was injured for the MEAC Tournament and that was when they played their best hoops of the year. So I guess he's not the key player? I'm just confused.
