Things looked bleak for the Hawkeyes: They'd dropped both matchups against in-state rivals Iowa State and Northern Iowa and started off Big Ten play losing half of their first 12 games. But Fran McCaffery's squad powered through, winning their last six games of the regular season before a Big Ten tourney loss to end up on the right side of the bracket.

Style of play: Hawkeye height

Iowa is one of the tallest teams in college hoops: their most commonly used lineup features a 7'1 center, two 6'9 forwards, and a 6'6 guard. Those extra inches come in handy on the offensive glass (the Hawks grab 35.5 percent of their misses, 37th best in college hoops) and on defense (opponents shoot 43.3 percent inside the arc, 30th best.)

Key player: Dunk a l'Orange

Aaron White went from totally unrecruited by major programs as a high school senior to first-team Big Ten as a college senior. The 6'9 forward runs well for a big man, sometimes sparking and sometimes finishing Iowa's fast breaks, and is quick enough to beat big men and draw fouls. He came on strong down the stretch, scoring 20 in Iowa's last five games.

A mini-controversy stirred around the Hawkeyes when center Adam Woodbury's handsy defense resulted in multiple players getting their eyes poked. It happened twice against Wisconsin and once against Maryland, leading to public feuds between inquisitive media members and coach McCaffery. The official word is the pokes were unintentional, and quite frankly, they totally could've been, but if they were, it was a hell of a coincidence.
