Purdue fans had Matt Painter on the hot seat, and it seemed justified: In 2013, they went to the lowly CBI, college hoops' third-rate tourney. In 2014, the Boilermakers finished dead last. And early in the season, they lost to Gardner-Webb and North Florida. But the Boilermakers fought onto the bubble with an 8-of-9 stretch, then firmly into the tourney by reaching the Big Ten semifinals.

Style of play: Big Boilers

Not many teams have a seven-footer, but the Boilermakers have two, 7'0 AJ Hammons and 7'2 freshman Isaac Haas. They don't play them together, but both are able to get rest and avoid foul trouble without much dropoff. The Boilers have the 19th-best block rating and 10th-best 2-point FG defense in the country thanks to their bigs.

Key player: Hammons, cheesed

AJ Hammons has the physical traits of an NBA center, that much is obvious to anybody who looks at him. He's 7'0, with long arms, good athleticism, and a wide body. But many, from fans to coaches, have questioned his motivation, which seems to come and go. Replacing Hammons in the starting lineup with Haas in January seemed to light a fire: Hammons quickly won the spot back, and the Boilermakers went on their winning streak.
