The Tour de France isn’t very good at being a sporting event.

The score is largely meaningless, and it’s hard to keep anyone in the lines, including the oft-wild fans. Better to think of it as a multi-course meal, an event that flows and shifts and ends only when you’ve had enough of it. And though each Tour has the same rough anatomy, as you’ll see, there have never been two alike.
