The 2013 Atlantic Sun Tournament began the semifinals portion of play on Friday. With four of the top five seeds still in the field, college hoops fans were treated to two great games.
In the first game, the No. 1 seeded Mercer Bears knocked off No. 5 USC Upstate by a score of 72-64. The Bears moved out to an early lead and held onto it throughout most of the contest, although Upstate tried to put together a run late. Bud Thomas led Mercer with 20 points and six rebounds, while Langston Hall had 18 points and six assists.
In the nightcap, the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles topped the Stetson Hatters,72-58, and are the last obstacle in Mercer's quest for an NCAA bid.
The A-Sun championship game between Mercer and Florida Gulf Coast will be played at noon on Saturday. The two teams split their regular season series, with both teams winning their home matchups. ESPN2 will have the television coverage.
