5-star point guard Alterique Gilbert commits to UConn

Kevin Ollie has himself another dynamic playmaker in the backcourt

David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

Point guard Alterique Gilbert committed to Connecticut over a group of schools that included Louisville, Illinois, Texas and Syracuse on Saturday morning, according to CBS. The Georgia native is the Huskies' second commit in the class of 2016, joining big man Mamadou Diarra.

Gilbert is considered a five-star prospect by ESPN, placing No. 23 in their class of 2016 rankings. ESPN has him as the No. 5 point guard in his class.

Gilbert's commitment adds to a Huskies backcourt that is already loaded with young talent. UConn's recruiting class of 2015 is led by point guard Jalen Adams, and Kevin Ollie's team will also be adding VCU transfer Terry Larrier for the 2016-17 season.

Gilbert will be a replacement in the backcourt for Sterling Gibbs and Omar Calhoun, both of whom are set to graduate following the 2015-16 season. UConn could also bring back Daniel Hamilton, Sam Cassell Jr. and Rodney Purvis on the perimeter in 2016-17.

Gilbert is a 6-foot, 170-pound guard who stars on Team CP3 alongside Harry Giles on Nike's EYBL circuit. Our UConn community The UConn Blog has more on him.
