The NCAA Tournament steals the show in March and April, and for good reason, but there is still good basketball to be played in the NIT. Thirty-two teams that are not selected for the NCAA Tournament will be selected for the NIT.
The selection process for the NIT is somewhat similar to the NCAA Tournament, as both are run by the NCAA. Teams are selected for at-large by their resumes -- including good wins, bad losses, RPI and record -- and teams must finish above .500 in order to be selected.
Teams that win their conference regular season titles, but do not win their conference tournaments and are not selected for the NCAA Tournament, are given automatic bids to the NIT.
A number of teams have already received automatic bids to the NIT, taking away spots for at-large teams. That includes Wagner, Hofstra, Bucknell, Belmont, UAB, IPFW, High Point and North Florida.
Wichita State, Saint Mary's, Valparaiso and Monmouth will also be added if they are not selected for the NCAA Tournament.
