North Carolina plays Villanova in the national championship game of the NCAA Tournament on Monday night. As much as these things possibly can, it promises to be an epic — pitting the two best teams in the country against one another after they've bulldozed the rest of the field in a combined 10-0 tournament run to get to this point.
For some perspective on how dominant North Carolina and Villanova have been so far, consider just how badly they've beaten up on the rest of the competition. Nine of their 10 wins have been by double digits, with the average margin of victory between the two teams coming in at 20.2 points per game.
That's preposterous excellence, and it's even more nutty in light of some of the teams they've played: The Tar Heels have beaten Indiana and Notre Dame, two well-oiled offensive machines, plus a Cinderella Syracuse team and a Providence team that had star guard Kris Dunn. The Wildcats have annihilated everyone, with their "worst" performance being a five-point triumph against top overall seed Kansas in the Elite Eight. These teams haven't even come close to losing. Villanova has won its five games by an average of 24.2 points!
Of course, that only makes Monday's championship game more compelling. Something has to give for somebody, and there's no obvious telling who that's going to be. The Wildcats looked as good as ever in crushing Oklahoma in their semifinal, and North Carolina continued to have virtually no trouble at all when it beat Syracuse shortly thereafter.
Neither has been seriously challenged beyond Villanova's sort of close win against Kansas, and the only thing that seems certain about the championship game is that it'll be closer than the game either of these teams is used to playing right now. The game will be broadcast on TBS, and it's also available for online viewing and internet and satellite radio listening. There are a lot of ways to take in the game.
