Villanova entered this week as No. 1 in the AP Poll. Kansas entered as No. 1 in the coaches poll. Marquette and West Virginia were apparently not intimidated.
About an hour after the Jayhawks fell in Morgantown for the fourth straight time, Villanova fell victim to a furious rally at Marquette. ‘Nova led by 15 at halftime, but some big shots by Katin Reinhardt carried the Golden Eagles to the win.
Marquette stormed the court about as hard as any program can:
This is Marquette’s second win over a top-10 team in the last week. The Golden Eagles also defeated No. 7 Creighton (sans Mo Watson, but still) on Saturday.
If you want to go by the AP Poll, the top two teams in the country losing on the same day is still big news:
This is the 21st time that No. 1 and No. 2 lost on the same day https://t.co/EJgYElP1rj— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) January 25, 2017
The last time that happened? Way back in 2016 when Oklahoma lost to Kansas State and North Carolina lost to Notre Dame.
Oh, by the way: No. 4 Kentucky lost to Tennessee 82-80, as well. The last time No. 1, No. 2 and No. 4 in the AP Poll all lost in the same day was in 1979.
We love you, college basketball.
