Jim Boeheim vs. UNC Greensboro is the funniest NIT matchup ever

Boeheim vs. Greensboro, chapter 2.

NCAA Basketball: Duke at Syracuse Rich Barnes-USA TODAY Sports

A partial recap of Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim’s last week:

  • Wednesday: Syracuse loses to Miami in its first ACC tournament game, 62-57. The game takes place in New York, not the tournament’s traditional home of Greensboro, N.C.
  • Later Wednesday: Boeheim meets the press and unloads a scalding defecation on Greensboro, saying there’s “no value” in playing there.
  • 13 minutes or so later, Wednesday: Greensboro fires back.

At this point, the score is City of Greensboro social media director 1, Boeheim nil.

  • Sunday: Syracuse misses the NCAA Tournament, as the presumptive first team out of the field of 68. The Orange headline our tournament snubs list.
  • A few hours later, Sunday: Syracuse gets an NIT bid, and the Orange’s first-round opponent is exactly the team you’d hoped it would be: UNC Greensboro.
  • A few minutes later, Sunday: Greensboro’s back on Twitter.

The NIT’s selection committee chairman, Reggie Minton, told ESPN after the matchup was revealed that this was not a way to work up drama for a first-round NIT game.

“You guys are a lot smarter than we were,” he said. “We didn't have that in our minds.”

If he says so.

Syracuse is playing at home (Tuesday, 7 p.m., ESPN). The Orange should win this game. But if Boeheim loses, Greensboro’s Twitter is going nuclear. He doesn’t want that.
