Illinois big man called Michigan a 'white-collar team,’ then lost by 20 in the Big Ten tournament

This quote didn’t age well.

Earlier this college basketball season, Illinois beat Michigan by 16 points, and Illini big man Maverick Morgan had things to say about UM’s toughness.

"They are more of a white-collar team traditionally and at Illinois we're about toughness and together," Morgan told reporters. "Not that they're not but we kind of pride ourselves on defense and that's something we've been working to get better at."

The teams played again on Thursday, after Michigan endured a hellacious day of travel to get to the Big Ten tournament in Washington, D.C., Michigan won, 75-55.

Morgan had four points, two rebounds, and five turnovers in 27 minutes.

This was actually the teams’ second meeting since Morgan’s poorly aging remark about Michigan’s team toughness. The Wolverines also beat the Illini by nine points in Ann Arbor on Jan. 21, 10 days after their original meeting in Champaign. It wasn’t clear if Michigan had used Morgan’s remark as motivation twice or just once.
