Intro

Once an afterthought at FSU, the Seminoles’ basketball team has become the premier program at a school that’s prioritized football at every turn. Under head coach Leonard Hamilton, FSU has turned into a program known for development, height and points, sending multiple first round picks to the NBA since 2016, and winning an ACC regular season title in 2020.

Player to Watch

Barnes is a projected lottery pick, having been highly lauded since his high school days. A capable two-way player, Barnes has an ability to both facilitate the Hamilton offense and take over when it’s needed. Big time dunks and blocks have become a staple of his game, a huge reason why Barnes is a favorite for ACC Freshman of the Year.

Case for Team

Florida State has the depth to compete with just about every team in the country. Once the Seminoles get rolling, it’s hard for opponents to dig themselves out of a hole given the speed, athleticism and height FSU possesses. A combination of freshman talent and developed experience has shown throughout the season, with senior M.J. Walker leading the team in points and multiple players showcasing huge strides in their game (forward RaiQuan Gray, center Balsa Koprivica).

Case Against Team

Though FSU has senior leadership, it becomes evident late in close games that they’re desperately missing the kind of steadfast captainship that Trent Forrest (2020) and Terrance Mann (2019) brought to the Seminoles. FSU has a penchant for playing too fast, creating unforced turnovers, and defensive rebounding issues were a key part of an upset loss to North Carolina in February.
