Trevion Thompson scouting report: 2014 wide receiver recruit

Get the first look at one of the most coveted wide receivers in the 2014 class.

Bud Elliot, SB Nation

Trevion Thompson has the size at 6'3 and 181 pounds to be a big-time college wide receiver, and that has many of the nation's top programs after his services. As of March, the recruit out of Durham (NC) Hillside High School holds offers from Florida, Ohio State, South Carolina, Virginia Tech, North Carolina, NC State, Vanderbilt, Purdue, and Duke.

Thompson is a composite 4-star recruit and rated as the No. 2 receiver in his class by 247 Sports. Scout pegs him as the fourth-best wideout of 2014 and joins Rivals in giving him four stars. Thompson figures to be near the top 50 overall nationally when all is said and done.

Bud Elliott, National Recruiting Analyst:

Thompson is a big, long receiver target. He catches the ball well with his strong hands, and fights for yards after the catch. He looks to have good body control to make catches, and finds the ball well, even when it is thrown poorly. Thompson is able to leap for the football over smaller defenders and should be a good threat in the red zone.

Thompson does not have elite speed or agility, and he does not accelerate very well out of cuts. He'll need to use his size and length when running routes over the middle, as he may not be able to separate all that well. Thompson has the frame to play north of 200 pounds, and will need to play with better strength to become a top receiver at the college level.

With his big frame and length, Thompson should also be a strong asset in the run game with his blocking as he adds muscle to his able frame.
