The Texas A&M Aggies picked up a big-time commitment on Monday with the pledge of Scottsdale (Ariz.) Desert Mountain quarterback Kyle Allen. Allen made his announcement on Twitter after a wild 30 minutes that saw the Aggies emerge from projected third-place finishers in the Allen derby to the top team to beat, according to industry prognosticators.

A consensus four-star prospect ranked as the No. 4 pro-style passer in the nation by the 247Sports composite rankings, Allen is considered the top player in Arizona, ahead of star teammate Mark Andrews, a wide receiver/tight end prospect. Allen held offers from programs across the country, but his final choice came down one of the group of Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M, or UCLA. Alabama, Arizona State, Ole Miss, and Tennessee also offered, among many others.

There was no particular consensus on Allen's decision until right before he made it at 4 p.m. ET. The 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions were split between leaders UCLA and Notre Dame, with A&M looking mostly out of the picture. However, in the moments leading up to the decision, Texas A&M trended heavily in the predictions and ultimately ended up with Allen's pledge.

The 6'3, 185-pounder made the decision after picking up recent offers from Alabama and Tennesse, neither of which were enough to change his ultimate destination. Allen had last visited College Station in mid-April for the A&M spring game.

Now Allen is the 12th commitment for the Aggies in the class of 2014 -- part of a group that now ranks among the absolute best in the nation -- and the second in less than 24 hours after a three-month spell between pledges. Allen helps secure the future of the quarterback position at the time when the Aggies are in serious danger of losing 2013 signee Kohl Stewart to the MLB Draft.
