There's no offseason in college football. There's recruiting season and those few months they play the games, and the latter just finished.
We're now less than a month away from National Signing Day, when the best high school players in the country will sign with their colleges of choice.
Many top recruits are already committed, but schools are still jockeying for position to be named the best class, and some of the best recruits in the country still have to pick where they'll play next year. Here's a look at the best recruits and best recruiting classes in the nation, from the 247Sports Composite ratings.
The contenders for the No. 1 class
Alabama has had the top class in the nation for the past five years, but that streak could end this season, as the Crimson Tide are currently ranked eighth. However, the Tide have many top targets still on the board.
Fellow SEC school LSU currently tops the rankings, weathering the Les Miles stay-or-go storm. But right behind the Tigers are Michigan and Ohio State.
Here's a look at the top 10 classes, according to the Composite.
Rank | Team | Commits | Score | Average score | 4/5-star percentage |
1 | LSU | 20 | 281.01 | 92.15 | 75% |

8 | Alabama | 17 | 253.45 | 91.28 | 59% |
9 | Notre Dame | 22 | 245.13 | 88.91 | 41% |
10 | Auburn | 17 | 244.12 | 90.62 | 53% |
The top five recruits
Ole Miss might not have the No. 1 class right now, but the Rebels have two of the five best players in the nation, with top offensive tackle Greg Little, who flipped from Texas A&M, and star quarterback Shea Patterson. So far, four of the top five players in the country have gone to schools in the South, with top recruit Rashan Gary the only undecided player in the group.
Here are the top five, according to the Composite.
Rank | Player | High School (State) | Position | Rating | School |
1 | Rashan Gary | Paramus Catholic (New Jersey) | Defensive tackle | 1.0000 | Undecided |

Ole Miss landing another surprising class
After a shocking 2013 class that included five-stars Robert Nkemdiche, Laremy Tunsil and Laquon Treadwell, Ole Miss is the biggest surprise of college football recruiting once again, landing two top five recruits and coming in at seventh in the Composite.
Ole Miss not only beat out Alabama on the field this year, but also for two major recruits in Patterson, who was named the U.S. Army All-American Bowl MVP, and in flipping Little from Texas A&M.
Little told SB Nation in the video below, that part of the reason he chose Ole Miss is because Hugh Freeze can help bring him deeper into his Christian faith, and that it felt more like a family as opposed to the factory feel at some other programs.
The Rebels are also involved with No. 1 player Rashan Gary.
