UAB vs. Houston final score: Cougars blow out Blazers

Houston wins third straight game and stays undefeated in Conference USA after defeating UAB on Saturday.

Thomas Campbell-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Houston Cougars are now a .500 team after disposing of the UAB Blazers on Saturday, 39-17.

The Cougars outscored the Blazers 29-10 after the first quarter, including a 20-0 third quarter that blew the game wide open.

The Cougars rode the arm of quarterback David Piland who put up 362 yards on 32 of 44 passing and one touchdown. But Piland had help. Running back Charles Sims rushed for 133 yards on 26 carries and Kenneth Farrow and Ryan Jackson both had rushing touchdowns. Wide receiver Shane Ros finished with seven receptions for 114 yards and a touchdown as the Cougars put up 566 yards of total offense.

UAB's Austin Brown (302 yards passing, 1 TD, 1 INT) and Jamarcus Nelson (six catches for 106 yards) did all they could but weren't able to score with the Cougars.

The Cougars improved to 3-3, 2-0 in Conference USA and the Blazers fell to 1-5, 0-2 in Conference USA.

Box Score Hero: Close call between Piland and Sims but this one goes to Piland. Piland put up 362 yards on 32 of 44 passing with one touchdown. Sims had a great game but didn't score.

Rankings Ramifications: Neither team will find themselves in the upcoming rankings.

But Did They Cover?: The spread had Houston as 12.5-point favorites. We're guessing a 22-point win should about do it.
