The Wake Forest Demon Deacons (4-3, 2-3) defeated the Virginia Cavaliers (2-6, 0-4) in an ACC clash, 16-10.
Wake Forest jumped out to an early lead in the first quarter. After being setup with excellent field position following a 60-yard punt return by Lovell Jackson, Josh Harris rushed for a 16-yard touchdown, putting the Demon Deacons up, 7-0.
Virginia bounced back and tied the game with 20 seconds left int he second quarter, when Phillip Sims connected with Tim Smith on a 13-yard touchdown pass.
Unfortunately for the Cavaliers, Wake Forest marched right down the field, and added a field goal with just three seconds left before halftime.
Wake Forest would not relinquish the lead.
The Demon Deacons managed to come away with the win, despite converting just 1-of-15 third-down opportunities. Wake Forest was outgained by Virginia in total yards, 301-213, but still managed to hang on for the victory.
Box Score Hero: Chad Hedlund, Wake Forest. Hedlund converted three field goals on three attempts, including a 44-yarder.
Rankings Ramifications: Neither team will factor into the latest rankings.
But Did They Cover? Virginia entered the game as 3.5-point favorites, and failed to cover.
Next Week's Schedule: Virginia has a bye week and will face the N.C. State Wolfpack Nov. 3, while Wake Forest will take on Clemson at home in a Thursday-night matchup Oct. 25.
