Despite giving up 572 yards of total offense, the Tulsa defense came up big when it needed to at the end of the game and held off the Marshall Thundering Herd to win 45-38.
The Golden Hurricane got out to the early lead in the game with a pair of first half Alex Singleton touchdowns at the end of the first quarter and the beginning of the second quarter that gave Tulsa a 17-3 lead. However, Marshall tied up the score as Rakeem Cato had plenty of success against the Tulsa defense.
Cato finished with 391 yards passing and three touchdowns, including a 32-yard touchdown pass to Antavious Wilson with 11 minutes remaining in the game to give Marshall a 38-37 lead. Tulsa's Cody Green responded, though, with his first touchdown pass of the game and, after a successful 2-point conversion, the Golden Hurricane earned a 45-38 lead.
The Tulsa defense managed to shut down two last drives by the Thundering Herd to seal the victory and earn a fifth consecutive win. With the win, Tulsa is still all alone at the top of the Conference USA standings with a 3-0 conference record, while Marshall dropped to 1-1 in conference play and 2-4 overall.
Box Score Hero: Tulsa running back Alex Singleton finished with 97 yards rushing and three touchdowns on 16 carries.
