The Iowa State Cyclones pulled off the upset on Saturday as they defeated the TCU Horned Frogs 37-23 Saturday afternoon.
TCU was playing without starting quarterback Casey Pachall, who has been suspended indefinitely for being arrested on a DWI charge this past week, and the Iowa State defense took advantage of that and picked off Pachall's replacement Trevone Boykin three times.
Overall, the Iowa State defense forced TCU to turn the ball over five times, and the final score could have been a lot worse as the Cyclones only scored 10 points off of those five turnovers.
The Cyclones offense got off to a quick start as they were up 10-0 and then 16-7 at the end of the first quarter, and they never looked back. Both first-quarter touchdowns were deep passes by quarterback Jared Barnett to wide receiver Josh Lenz; the two passes were 51 and 74 yards.
Iowa State did allow TCU to make it a game when the Horned Frogs outscored the Cyclones 13-7 between the second and third quarters, that made it a 23-20 game heading into the final quarter.
Both teams exchanged touchdowns in the fourth quarter, but the game was sealed when David Irving returned an interception 21 yards with 7:51 left to put the Cyclones on top for good at 37-23.
Box Score Hero: Josh Lenz, who caught five receptions for 147 yards and three receiving touchdowns. Plus, he also completed one pass for 15 yards, which also was for a touchdown.
Rankings Ramifications: TCU will take a tumble and likely fall near the bottom of the polls. Iowa State is now 4-1 and will definitely receive more votes in the polls, and will be very close to being ranked.
But Did They Cover? No. TCU was a 14.5-point favorite, and they lost.
Next Week's Schedule: Iowa State will be hosting Kansas State on Oct. 13, and TCU travels to Baylor for a Oct. 13 start.
