Texas Tech suspends 3 for Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas

Three Texas Tech players, including two members of the defensive rotation planning to play in their final collegiate game, will be suspended for the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas.

Texas Tech will be without three players for their bowl game against Minnesota, as the team has announced the suspensions of cornerback Cornelius Douglas, defensive tackle Leon Mackey, and linebacker Chris Payne.

Douglas was the most prominent of the three, starting five games before a knee injury, recording two interceptions. Mackey had one sack in 11 games as a reserve lineman, while Payne had three tackles in sparing playing time. Douglas and Mackey are seniors, so the suspension will end their careers a game earlier than anticipated.

The three players were suspended for a violation of team rules, although it's currently unclear exactly what they did to merit the suspensions. The 7-5 Red Raiders take on Minnesota in the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas Friday in Houston. With Tommy Tuberville gone to take the job at Cincinnati and Kliff Kingsbury not in charge yet, offensive line coach Chris Thomsen is the team's interim coach.
