Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston placed himself firmly in Heisman Trophy contention with a spectacular performance against Clemson on Saturday night. The redshirt freshman completed 22 of 34 pass attempts for a staggering 444 yards and three touchdowns while throwing just one interception, as the Seminoles pummeled the Tigers 51-14. With a prime time audience watching and ESPN television cameras given full access to the Seminoles, the game became a showcase for Winston.
Winston has now completed more than 71 percent of his pass attempts this season, racking up 1,885 passing yards and 20 touchdowns through six games. The redshirt freshman has also run for 137 yards and three scores, and his 210.4 quarterback rating would be an all-time Florida State record.
ESPN's locker room access showed that Winston has become a leader for the Seminoles, now 6-0 overall and 4-0 in ACC play.
Florida State hosts NC State next Saturday before a crucial game against in-state rival Miami on November 2.
