If the season ended today, Florida State would play Alabama for the BCS National Championship. It doesn't end today, though.
The Noles have taken back the No. 2 spot from Oregon, one week after giving it up, thanks to a bump in the human polls and Seminole computer dominance. FSU's 41-14 smashing of former No. 7 Miami on national television couldn't have come at a better time, as Oregon was on a bye this weekend.
That bye ends Thursday, though, when Oregon travels to play No. 5 Stanford. A potential convincing win is expected to flip the Ducks and Noles again, with FSU unlikely having the strength of schedule down the stretch to do much of anything about that. Unless, of course, Oregon or Alabama loses. Or if the Seminoles continue shattering opponents and Oregon struggles, thereby swaying more and more voters. You know, college football stuff.

Elsewhere, Ohio State, Baylor, and Stanford remain in the running, with the SEC and Big 12 stuffing a crowd of one- and two-loss teams in the dark-horse mix. Teams must finish in the top 14 to be eligible for a BCS bowl at-large spot.
After that, note where Fresno State and Northern Illinois wind up. If the higher-ranked of the two non-AQs can finish in the top 16 and ahead of a BCS-conference champion (likely UCF, at this point) or in the top 12, it'll snatch an automatic BCS bid away from one of those at-larges.
For now, the story is the same as it's been for two weeks: hollerin' about Florida State and Oregon. By Thursday night, that will either end or intensify. And Thursday night's co-headliner, Oklahoma at Baylor, will either thin the herd or add the Bears directly into the argument, while Saturday's LSU-Alabama could completely wreck everything.
No matter what, there will be something to argue about at this time next week.
Fun facts from the National Football Foundation:
Only three times in BCS standings history has the No. 1 team in Week 3 not played in the BCS National Championship Game: Oklahoma (2002), Alabama (2008), and Florida (2009).
The following schools boast their highest-ever ranking in the BCS standings: Baylor (No. 6 - tied),Fresno State (No. 16 - tied), and Central Florida (No. 21).
Alabama has been ranked No. 4 or higher for 19 consecutive weeks. Oregon has been ranked No. 5 or higher for 12 consecutive weeks.
Florida State boasts its first 8-0 start since 1999, when they went 12-0 and won the 2000 BCS National Championship Game.
