Luck has been viewed as a top candidate for the job for a couple of weeks now. The inclusion of Patterson is a bit of a surprise, though; a week ago, it seemed he was not being viewed as a serious candidate. After meeting with an advisement group, it seems the Longhorns decided Patterson was a viable option.
Arizona State AD Steve Patterson made a big impression with advisory committee in Texas AD search. Oliver Luck has company.

Patterson was named athletic director at Arizona State on March 28, 2012. He played a large role in bringing current football coach Todd Graham to Tempe and helped get the ball rolling on a handful of large-scale projects, including future renovations to Sun Devil Stadium. Patterson graduated from the University of Texas in 1980 and earned his law degree from UT's law school in 1984.
