Thursday night changed the national college football picture, and we still have a full Saturday with a prime-time blockbuster to go.

Early shift

Best option: No. 9 Auburn at Tennessee

Odds: Auburn -7
Weather: Upper 50s, clear

Gus Malzahn's insurgent Tigers come up against a young Tennessee team in this one, and while the Vols are 4-5 (1-4) on the year, they're probably the most dangerous sub-.500 team in the nation. Auburn is Tennessee's fifth straight opponent ranked No. 11 or better at game time, and that doesn't even count the Vols' game against Oregon in Week 2. So needless to say, nobody in Tennessee's going to be terribly overwhelmed by the notion of Auburn coming to town.

Plan B: Kansas State at No. 25 Texas Tech

The sheen has come off Kliff Kingsbury's Red Raiders after Oklahoma State delivered a whippin' in Lubbock last week, but that was less about Tech being "exposed" and more a market correction as the strength of schedule started to meet what a BCS conference team's ought to look like. At any rate, the Red Raiders are still mighty fun to watch and they should put on a show against the still-frisky KSU.

Keep it in mind: No. 2 Florida State at Wake Forest

Jameis Winston is going to destroy the Demon Deacons and call it a day and that's that, right? Well ... maybe not. Maybe. Wake Forest allows fewer than 20 points a game on the year, and were it not for a truly anemic offense it might be a bowl contender yet again. Plus the game's in Winston-Salem, so perhaps some drama's in store here. Or perhaps not; Wake Forest also got obliterated by Tajh Boyd and Clemson 56-7 this year, so y'know, this could get ugly.

In case of emergency: No. 8 Missouri at Kentucky

Should be decent football, but count on the announcers (and most of the fans in the stadium) talking basketball by halfway through the third quarter.

Middle shift

Best option: Illinois at Indiana

Odds: Indiana -10
Weather: Low 50s, partly cloudy

HEAR ME OUT. I feel like I haven't adequately alerted people to the jaw-dropping lunacy of Indiana games this season, and for that I apologize and would like to make amends immediately. Indiana games feature 79.8 points per game between the two teams, which is what happens when you have a great offense and a stunningly inept defense. Here are some Indiana scores, all from this season: 73-35 (W), 41-35 (L), 63-47 (L). 42-39 (L). The Hoosiers scored 28 points on Missouri and Michigan State, both the most either team has given up this season. Now Illinois comes to town, and while Illinois hasn't won a Big Ten game in years, it's totally capable of getting into a bazooka fight with the Hoosiers. Seriously, this one could get fun. #CHAOSTEAM forever.

Plan B: BYU at No. 24 Wisconsin

Don't look at this game as "only" the No. 24 team; Wisconsin being ranked so low is the biggest travesty in the entire poll, even more than Fresno State at No. 16. Wisconsin would annihilate Fresno. It'll have its hands full with a very tough, physical BYU team though, and this should be an absolute hog fight. Do hogs fight? Anyway, these two teams combine for an average of 540 rushing yards per game, and they could eclipse that total this week. Giddyup.

Keep it in mind: Mississippi State at No. 15 Texas A&M

If Johnny Manziel incinerating an SEC defense is your thing — and we think it is — you should get some enjoyment out of this one. MSU's not bad, but it's wildly overmatched in this one.

In case of emergency: Nebraska at Michigan

These teams aren't about to win the Big Ten Legends division with Michigan State choking out all comers, but this one should at least be entertaining, especially if Taylor Martinez can go for Nebraska. These teams make a living feasting on mediocre defenses, and wouldn't you know it: both defenses are mediocre.

Late shift

Best option: No. 13 LSU at No. 1 Alabama

Odds: Alabama -11
Weather: 50s, clear

The SEC West's best rivalry gives it another go this year, and could there be anything more Les Miles than waltzing into Tuscaloosa and beating the No. 1 team in the nation? Again? Yes, Alabama's favored by a rather substantial margin, and LSU's still working out plenty of kinks on the defense, but Zach Mettenberger is the rare quarterback who has the arm talent to throw on the Tide secondary, and if tailback Jeremy Hill can get a crease or two against Bama's front, LSU could sustain some drives. On the other hand, if Alabama's really the best team in the nation — something that shouldn't go blindly unquestioned with the job Oregon, FSU and Baylor are all doing thus far — it'll make a statement with a big win here. Either way, you're going to be watching a lot of guys who'll be playing on Sundays soon in this one, so buckle up: this is Saturday's best game by a long shot.

Plan B: No. 19 UCLA at Arizona

We could definitely have some west coast shenanigans in this one, as UCLA's only favored by a point in the late game. Both teams run highly entertaining offenses, with Jim Mora and Rich Rodriguez calling the shots and top QBs Brett Hundley and B.J. Denker running the show (don't sleep on Denker, by the way — tremendous dual-threat action with him). It's a perfect nightcap after Alabama-LSU, really, and it could easily go late with some endgame tomfoolery. And who doesn't love that after 1 in the morning?

Keep it in mind: Virginia Tech at No. 11 Miami

I want this game to be higher, so very badly. But Virginia Tech has been brutal this year, and not in a fun and interesting way, while Miami will be missing top tailback Duke Johnson after he suffered a broken ankle late against Florida State last week. There's still enough talent on the field that this game merits attention, but Virginia Tech's not on the level of the last decade or so and Miami's not even close to 100 percent.

In case of emergency: No. 16 Fresno State at Wyoming

Wyoming took Nebraska to the limit earlier this year, but the Cowboys are just 4-4 on the season and just fired their defensive coordinator after giving up more than 50 points in back-to-back games. What we're saying is the Fresno Farce will probably continue marching along, all the way to a BCS bowl bid. This might stay close, though, and if so, keep those fingers crossed; late upsets are the most fun upsets.
