After a tough loss against Clemson in their opening week contest, Georgia rebounded with a big victory over visiting South Carolina on Saturday, defeating the Gamecocks 41-30 in Athens.
The vaunted Bulldog offense came through, as Aaron Murray threw for 309 yards and four touchdowns while Todd Gurley ran for 134 yards and a score. The Gamecocks tied it up with 13 seconds to go in the second quarter with an excellent 30-yard touchdown pass from Connor Shaw to Nick Jones, but the Bulldogs outscored South Carolina 17-6 in the second half on their way to the victory.
DavetheDawg from DawgSports noted Georgia's ability to game-plan around South Carolina defensive star Jadeveon Clowney:
Mike Bobo dialed up an excellent game plan. Yes, he did. He was aggressive, which is how we should be every game. We often ran directly at Jadeveon Clowney, whose own aggressiveness sometimes backfired, particularly on the beautifully executed touchdown screen to Keith Marshall early in the 2nd quarter. Clowney had a single sack, much to the dismay of the highlight-reel editors of your favorite 24-hour sports network. Bobo utilized the intermediate passing game all evening, limited the amount of time Aaron Murray would sit in the pocket thus neutralizing Carolina's edge rush.
Gamecock Man from Garnet and Black Attack is already looking forward, and thinks South Carolina can catch the Bulldogs in the SEC East:
This is obviously a tough loss, but there is a silver lining. Particularly considering how Florida played today, we're likely going to be favored in all remaining conference games in a schedule that's easier than UGA's, and if we can take care of business and win out, certainly not out of the realm of possibilities if our defense improves over the course of the season, we can catch Georgia in the standings. We'll have to hope for Georgia losses, which aren't assured, again particularly considering how Florida looked today, but there's still a reasonable chance they'll lose at least two remaining conference games.
Georgia has a week off before what should be an easier home contest against North Texas. South Carolina continues with conference play, hosting Vanderbilt on Saturday.
